Best of Baltimore:

The fancy new course at Bulle Rock is getting much deserved attention, but seasoned golfers tell us that the 7000 yard Arthur Hill's course at Howard County's Waverly Woods, 2100 Warwick Way, Mariottsville, (410) 312-9182, offers true, undulating greens, sloped fairways, and tee shots that are challenging for both beginners and advanced golfers - and for a much more affordable price. There's also a 9000-square foot putting green, a short game practice area, and a practice range.

Review:

Opened last July, this Howard County course offers miles of stunning vistas into Carroll and Baltimore counties. Although Waverly Woods 'where fairways are bentgrass' offers a lot of room off the tees and wide landing areas, it's difficult to get close to the pin because of relatively small and strategic greens on this par 72, 7024-yard course. Check out the superb 70,000-square-foot all-grass practice area on this course, one of the best in the region, designed by Arthur Hills. Son Joe Hills and partner Tom Healy are the developer-owners. There's also a driving range, an unusual short-game practice area with bunkers, and a large practice putting green.
